DeBabelizer® Lite provides easy to use graphics translation, and can be used by anyone who creates and/or uses computer graphics. It is derived from the award winning program DeBabelizer® - The Graphics Processing Toolbox, a professional graphics processing program.
Since 1989, DeBabelizer has been utilized by artists, designers, art directors, graphics houses, desktop publishers, service bureaus, and multimedia, interactive entertainment, and software developers throughout the world. DeBabelizer Lite was created to provide affordable, easy to use, quality file translation to all graphics users.
The name is derived from the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel. In this story, when the Lord saw that the people were building a tower to reach all the way to heaven, he revoked the celestial building permit by causing all the workers to speak a different language. Unable to communicate, the people scattered to the four corners of the earth, thereby putting an end to the project.
Although there was no divine intervention causing the Tower of Babel of computer graphic file formats, this modern day problem has been just as devastating. Raster art is created on various computers with various programs, many having their own file format. The result is a multitude of incompatible files of almost Biblical proportions. Today’s digital artist must be able to access a variety of formats and integrate them into many computer art tools.
DeBabelizer Lite provides the ability to read and save graphics while maintaining maximum color integrity across formats, bit depths and platforms.
• DeBabelizer Lite automatically recognizes over 55 different bit-mapped graphics and animation formats. These include files created by programs on the Macintosh™, MS-DOS™, Windows™, Silicon Graphics™, Amiga™ and other computers and operating systems.
• DeBabelizer Lite writes over 40 different cross platform bit-mapped graphics formats. Picture Icons and Picture Previews are automatically created for each image.
• DeBabelizer Lite translates individual images or a whole folder of images at one time.
• DeBabelizer Lite reads and translates files to any bit depth supported by a specific format, automatically producing the highest quality translation, using that format's most popular characteristics.
Example: When translating a Windows BMP 256 color file to Macintosh PICT, the color white will automatically be placed at color 0 and black at color 255 in the palette, the way Macintosh programs expect it to be.
• DeBabelizer Lite uses Photoshop (and third party) Acquire, Filter, and Export plug-ins.
With Acquire plug-ins, images can be scanned or digitized directly into DeBabelizer Lite for translation to any format desired. Acquire plug-ins can also be used to read images in formats that are not currently supported by DeBabelizer Lite.
Filters can be used to transform images. Since most filters can only be used on RGB images, if an image contains fewer than 17 million colors and a filter is chosen, it will automatically be altered to 17 million colors.
Export plug-ins can be used to save to formats that are not currently supported by DeBabelizer Lite and to output the file to a variety of hardware devices, such as film recorders, video recorders, etc.

Currently, DeBabelizer Lite does not support vector graphics (except for reading vector PICT), CMYK and DCS formats.
When animation formats are read,any frame can be opened.
Any halftone or audio information contained in an image will be discarded when the image is read.
